Detailed Report for the Day consists of:
Recession fears ease despite shipping disruption, but the Red Sea attacks cause 90-day waits for parts
The monthly economic tracker from Lloyds Bank shows that the economic growth has broadened across the UK’s private sector to hit a ten-month high in February, which seems to coincide with the ONS data last week. Software and financial services are the best-performing sectors as it accounts for 75% of the UK’s GDP.
Then the Red Sea attacks caused 90-day waits for parts shows that while all the other sectors are overcoming their difficult times, manufacturing is having a harder time as Make UK (the manufacturing trade association) says that factories are experiencing massive lead times as a result of what is happening on the Red Sea.
This means: that while some industries are getting better economically, on the other hand, the manufacturing industry is affected largely by the Red Sea attacks and how long is not yet clear.
Nespresso wakes up to the UK boom with its first cafe and Hot Chocolate brand Knoops warms up for rapid expansion
The coffee capsule brand is going to open its first on-the-go “Nespresso bar” in Old Broad Street, near Liverpool Street Station in London. This will be the first of its kind in Europe, but the Nestle-owned subsidiary will aim to roll out in Europe.
Knoops is aiming for a major roll-out with its hot chocolate brand with 40 by this time next year, eventually rising to 300 across Britain. It already has a design for international expansion, having secured a partner in the Middle East, and is in discussions in the US and China.
This means: that whilst both of the companies are making positive efforts to expand their business, would it be profitable in the long run? We have to wait and see.
World’s largest solar manufacturer to cut one-third of workforce
Longi is cutting up to 30% of its workforce as it accelerates the cost cuts it started to put in place last year. Staff numbers were believed to be in the region of 80,000 at the peak of last year.
Nvidia unveils powerful chip in push to extend dominance in AI market
Nvidia has unveiled an even more powerful AI chip in its ongoing efforts to remain at the cutting edge of its hot tech! The new Blackwell GPU (aka GB200) has 208bn transistors vs “paltry” 80bn, in its previously most-powerful chip, the H100. CEO Jensen Huang said that the chip was twice as powerful as the current generation of GPUs and has five times the “inference”.
This means: that China are very ahead in their game of chips, and this gives them control over the rest of the world for holding onto the most powerful AI weapons.
Google is in talks to install chatbots in every iPhone
Google and Apple are exploring a deal that could mean we get chatbots on every iPhone that will be powered by Google’s Gemini bot. The idea is that they will be the driver behind Apple’s AI tools like Siri.
This means: that it be helpful for Google as they were criticised over Gemini for bizarre answers and generating weird images.
